DOOM -- The game that changed everything
Yes, the first review is for a game everyone already knows about. It's not much of a review of DOOM itself anyway, and more of a nostalgia piece on my experiences with the game year ago. It also includes
a new WAD file with a new map I created just for this review! Check out the review and the new map by clicking the DOOM logo or the link above.
I've got a few other games in the works as well a couple PC and a couple console games. We will see which pan out but I expect to post another review as well as some additional updates to the home page and the site
over the next week to ten days.
A Return to the Amateur Internet
Welcome to my fun personal project. It's essentially a "blog" as we'd call it today. The real goal behind it all is two-fold:
First, it's a modern day time capsule to the Internet of the 90s. Those of us who remember the Internet in the late 90s, it was a totally different world. Those of us that wanted to share talents and express ourselves
didn't aspire to become a famous YouTuber or a social media "influencer". YouTube (or much of any streaming video) and social media just didn't exist yet. We were tethered to our computers and a wired connection that
was typically a dial-up modem and later on for the lucky of us a "high-speed" connection of something like 384kbps. Many of us would look all around for free web hosting options so we could use raw code or crude tools
to make a little place for ourselves. The Internet was still a frontier filled with amateur offerings hosted on sites like Geocities. Well, I want to bring a little bit of those fun days back!
I intend to keep this site on Neocities (for the nostalgia factor) and stick to static pages for the most part. I am coding the entire site myself by hand. No WordPress, no premade blog site, just good old HTML
and my pathetic (but hopefully improving) skills. It will intentionally look amateurish. There will be a few too many animated GIFs, and text that moves around, and lame looking graphics. I do intend to use some modern
tech and make it more readable and accessible (on mobile for example), but that may not be the case at first. After all, my web design skills are stuck in the past, and I am learning as I go.
Secondly, I will be reviewing and doing write-ups on games. Typically these games will be from the 90s, but that's not a firm rule. There won't be reviews of the hottest new open-world RPGs or op-eds
on whether microtransactions are gambling or not. Some of the games will be popular and still widely known, yet many others will be things I hope you've never heard of or have long forgotten.
Part of the excitement for me is finding and trying games--both odd games I've never heard of and renowned games for whatever reason I never tried. Hopefully it doesn't become formulaic; I don't want any two reviews
to be alike. Both PC and console titles will be considered. The intent is that I pick out and actually spend some time with these games and not throw up a review of the intro music and title screen.
This site can also be reached at the domain the90sgamer.com but for now it's just a redirect as I want to keep the Neocities URL. More to come soon! I'll be constantly working on
the site and posting the changes whenever I update something. The goal is to have fun, not seek perfection. I suppose I could say--this site is under construction!
